If you are a web developer, especially if you have Ruby on Rails or graphical design skills, I would love to have your help with the web application I am developing to replace QuickFrame. This new application is tentatively being called StudyWorx since it is designed to do much more than simply create blank chart frames. It is designed to be a complete study environment where a student can fully complete their inductive studies online, including grading and communication with teaching staff. Essentially it is a framework for running online inductive Bible schools.

If this interests you please read on….

Of course, this software is being designed to meet a need in the School of Biblical Studies, however it will be flexible enough to facilitate almost any kind of online class.

To see the prototype’s code, specifications, and documentation see the repository at: http://launchpad.net/studyworx

To get a (very)quick overview of how to get started developing for StudyWorx click here.

If you have any questions or are wondering if you have the skills to help with this. Please feel free to contact me. I would love to talk to anyone that is interested in the project. Even if it is just to offer your opinions and your feature requests.

Thanks,

I have updated the StandAlone server for Microsoft computers. However, the installation of this new version is slightly different than the setup for the earlier version. For step by step instructions read on…

Download the new version of QuickFrame Standalone. [Download]

This is the tricky part. You will need to expand the QuickFrame_Standalone.zip file into a folder that does not have a space in its name. It is usually best to create this folder right on the :c\ drive. The path to this folder should look something like this. :c\quickframe.

Once you have the .zip file expanded into this new location you are now ready to start the QuickFrame Standalone server. Open the folder and click on the blue start icon. This will create a small blue square with a number in it in your tray.

Click the small blue square and then click “start UniServer” from the menu that pops up.

Wait for a minute as the server starts, it should open your Internet Browser and take you to the UniServer home page. Near the middle of the page there is a link to open QuickFrame.

QuickFrame will open and the username and password should already be filled in. Click the login button and you ready to chart!

Enjoy!

Creating an account

The first step in using this program is to create a user account. At this point anyone can sign up for an account simply by clicking on the “Need a new account?” link on the login page. After you enter all the requested information you will be given an account. Your new temporary password will be emailed to you.
You will be asked to change it the first time you log in to something that you can more easily remember.

Restoring a lost password

Click the link on the login page enter your account name and email address.
A new password will be mailed to you just like it was when you opened your account.

Starting a New Book

From the “Home” page simply select the book you wish to work on from the list and click the button below it.

The books you have already started are listed on the right.

To continue working on an existing book just click on its name and it will be reloaded so you can continue working.

Adding Paragraph Titles

When you start (or restart) a book the default mode is adding paragraph
titles.

The best practice is to enter ALL your paragraph titles first.
Then when you are sure they are correct begin to add your Segments and Breaks.

The best way to begin is to use the auto-fill button in the yellow bar below the editing window. This will add all the verse references you need and it will count your verses so you don’t have to. All you need to do then is add you actual titles.

(Remember that your verse refs are included in your title. The box labeled “verse ref” is used for your segment titles. This will be activated when you click to insert a segment. Ignore it for now.)

If you skip one or make a mistake you can insert, edit, or delete a title by clicking the edit icon to the left of the title.
This will open an editing window where you may choose what you would like to do.

Adding Segments, Sections, etc

When you are done adding your paragraph titles it is now time to start thinking about your breaks. To add any break whether it be Segment, Section, Division, or Book title follow the procedure below.

Click on the edit icon next to the paragraph title where you wish to add a break.

Find the type of break on the list in the window that pops up.

You will see that you can insert the break either above or below the point you have selected. Click either the “up” or “down” arrow to choose
and add your title.

Segments require verse references since these will also be used as Vertical titles.

Book Titles should be added to the end of the list and usually done last.

If you have a long title for a break and a tiny break. You may click the footnote checkbox which will place the title in a footnote with a small marker in the actual box in your horizontal.

If you make a mistake your breaks can be edited just like paragraph titles. IF YOU PUT ONE IN THE WRONG PLACE it can be moved with the move buttons and edited.

IMPORTANT! If you do not have a book title your charts will not build. And If you do not have at least one segment there will be no vertical charts created.

Once you have finished these steps you are ready to move on to Building your Charts!

Building your Charts

When you have finished all your titles you are now ready to Build your charts. Please follow the steps below.

Check the total number of verses you have assigned with the total number of verses in the book. If you are off 1 or 2 no big deal. But if you are off more than a few you have made a mistake in counting the verses in your titles and probably need to go back and check them out. You may have also accidentally deleted one of your paragraphs. Small discrepancies are common due to the mid-verse paragraph splitting that is common in some books. This can cause you to count the same verse more than once. This is not serious. (If you used auto-populate verses will be counted for you already)

If all is well. Click one of the two buttons in the builder tool box. They each have descriptions on them if you hold your mouse over them. Basically one of them is for small books and the other is for medium to large books.

Your results should pop up in the right hand window. If not Contact me.

Check your results by clicking one of your charts. If you need to make adjustments to the fonts etc. Then do the following.

Select different fonts and sizes from the builder tool box and click the change button.

To see what the fonts look like click the font previewer button. You can change fonts on the fly by clicking on the links below the font examples.

IMPORTANT!!!!! If you change font SIZES you must click the change button at the bottom before they will take effect. If you have changed the font type with the previewer those changes are good to go as soon as you click them.

Click the proper build button and see if you like your new changes.

When you are happy with the results you are ready to either save or print your work.

Very small books

There are a couple of things that change if you are doing a very small book that only requires one vertical chart. These books may have a
division or maybe even sections. However to produce a vertical chart there are a couple things you must be aware of.

Only segments produce vertical charts.

Therefore when doing a small book you need to make one segment that encompasses the entire book and the title you give this segment will be your vertical chart title.

All books must have at least one segment to produce a vertical chart.

Printing and Saving charts for use

I would HIGHLY recommend opening all your charts in new tabs. This will make the next steps much nicer.

You may either print directly from your browser at this point or save your charts as images.

If possible I recommend that you save them as images and either paste them into a word proccessor or drawing program (I recommend the drawing program
that is part of OpenOffice.org it is free and works very well for charting.) You may also want to print or manipulate it with some other program designed to handle graphics.

Printing from Browsers

Printing from browsers is a little more error prone, gives you less control, and usually poorer quality results. But it does work, and
it produces acceptable charts. However it is often neccessary to adjust the height of the charts so that your browser will print it on one page.

Before printing

Check your charts with print preview if possible to see if they will all fit on one page.

Tip:
Get Firefox

You may also need to go into the printer settings in your browser and turn off the url and date printing “features” or you will have a lot extraneous
things printed on each chart. Similar to the kind of things you get printed at the top and bottom of the page when you print an email or story from the web.

Importing and Exporting your files

QuickFrame now has the ability to import and export files. This allows you to keep backup copies of your work on your own computer. It also allows
you to move your work to and from the main QuickFrame server to your own private QuickFrame server. This new personal server allows you to work on QuickFrame even in places with no reliable internet connection.

REMEMBER:

When you IMPORT files you will completely replace all the current files
with those in the files you are importing. So MAKE SURE that you
are importing the latest copies of your work or you will lose your latest
work.

Problems and Feedback

Since this is a new project and still under development. You have an
interesting opportunity to influence the way this program works.
I have produced a Feedback area on this site specifically designed to
allow you to report problems and give suggestions on how this program or
its documentation could be made more useful.

Please take the time to give your input here. It will be much appreciated.

Thank you,

In the world of never ending spam email providers are getting more and more aggressive in filtering spam. In the past when people were not receiving their QuickFrame password emails all they had to do was look in their junk mail folder. However, I am now getting many reports that these emails are not only getting filtered but in many cases being destroyed before anyone can look at them.

Keep reading to learn what to do…

The best solution when you are not receiving your email at all is to use a throw away email account at a place like mailinator.com.

Simply make up a name like yourname@mailinator.com and put it in the space for your email address. Then go to mailinator.com and type in yourname (replace yourname with whatever you want) and your confirmation email should be there.

Hope that helps!

In the course of providing QuickFrame for schools around he world one problem has cropped up repeatedly. Unreliable or expensive access to the Internet.

I have come up with basically 2 alternatives for those that are faced with this problem.

Stand Alone Versions of QuickFrame

Stand Alone versions of QuickFrame are basically little web servers all configured for running QuickFrame that you can download, unzip, and run on your computer. Once you have downloaded the package you do not need to use the Internet at all to create chart frames with QuickFrame. These packages are available for Mac and PC platforms.

Pros

Your version of QuickFrame is self contained on your computer and you do not need an Internet connection.

Cons

Your version of QuickFrame is self contained on your computer and if your computer fails you loose your data.

QuickFrame Virtual Server

This package is more for a school leader that would like to provide a local network setup of QuickFrame. This package includes a grading program and allows any kind of computer to connect to the local network and have access to QuickFrame and this also allows central backups to be made. This is a great way to set up a computer lab for your students to safely use QuickFrame even when a good high speed Internet connection is not possible or economical.

Where to Download

The main download page is located here.

Locate the package you need, download them, and unzip them.

Because of the difficulty and expense of reliable Internet connections in some places I have added a stand alone version of QuickFrame for the MAC. The QuickFrame StandAlone server will allow you to use QuickFrame on your Mac computer without an Internet connection. Now whether you use a mac or a PC you can use QuickFrame with or without the Internet.

You can be using it in 6 easy steps:

Download the file named MAMP.zip here [Click to Download]

Extract the compressed MAMP.zip file to your desktop.

Move the folder named MAMP to the Applications folder on your computer.

Open the folder in the Applications folder and click on the icon called MAMP. When the control panel opens up click the start button this will start the QuickFrame servers processes. You are now ready to start using your new private Quickframe server.

Your browser should open to the home page of your new stand alone QuickFrame server. If not open your web browser and type in http://localhost:8888/quickframe

Log in as admin with a password of 4quickframe.

Once you have your server running you can also manage it from the handy web interface. To get to this interface go to http://localhost:8888 there are links on the left for various management functions and tools.

To Shut Down your server:

Open the Control Panel again and click the Stop button.

When the lights turn red your server is totally shut down and you can close the Control Panel.

There is also a widget that will join your other widgets when you hit f12. To install it you simply drag the widget icon to the /Library/Widgets folder on your computer. This will place a widget on your desktop to conveniently start and stop your QuickFrame server.

Enjoy!

A brand new version of QuickFrame Stand-Alone Server is out. It includes all the new features incorporated in the latest online version. I have included a few instructions below to help you get started.

Downloading

To download your copy of QuickFrame Stand-Alone Server go to the download page and download the latest version.

Unpacking QuickFrame

The QuickFrame Server comes in a “zip” file in Windows you generally just have to double click on it and extract it to the location of your choice. I recommend extracting it to your desktop to start. You can move the folder anywhere you want later.

Running QuickFrame

Once you have the file extracted you will see a folder called QuickFrame on your Desktop. Double click this folder and it will open on your desk top. There are two very import icons in this folder they are labeled: Server_Start and Stop

These two buttons not surprisingly are how you start and stop QuickFrame

Double click: Server_Start

In a few seconds your browser will open and you will be taken to the start page for your new QuickFrame Server. From there you can go to QuickFrame directly or go to the Administration page. The administration page gives you complete control of every aspect of your server but you will not have to use it for anything other that possibly changing passwords. There is documentation included on that page if you want to know more about how the QuickFrame Stand-Alone Server works.

QuickFrame Stand-Alone is powered by the awesome work of the people at “The Uniform Server” it is a powerful application and they do accept donations. If you feel this software was worth something to you consider giving them a small donation for all of their effort.

A Few Words about Passwords

All passwords are set to username: admin Password: 4quickframe

When you forget your password to QuickFrame it will reset your password to: 4quickframe.

If you are the only one using your server this is probably fine. However this is a full fledged server package and if you let others use it or you allow access from the internet, you will need to change all these passwords or you will open a HUGE security hole in your machine. This is your warning.

1 exception: Your main mysql (the database) user account is called root and the password is: 4quickframe

Work on adding the auto-population references needed for the ESV version of the Bible is done thanks to the hard work of a bunch of our 2006-2007 alumni. The ability to use more than one version, a new color scheme, and the ability to auto-populate the ESV have now all been added to the current version of Virtual-QuickFrame. It is available for free download from the Downloads page.
