Creating an account

The first step in using this program is to create a user account. At this point anyone can sign up for an account simply by clicking on the “Need a new account?” link on the login page. After you enter all the requested information you will be given an account. Your new temporary password will be emailed to you.
You will be asked to change it the first time you log in to something that you can more easily remember.

Restoring a lost password

Click the link on the login page enter your account name and email address.
A new password will be mailed to you just like it was when you opened your account.

Starting a New Book

From the “Home” page simply select the book you wish to work on from the list and click the button below it.

The books you have already started are listed on the right.

To continue working on an existing book just click on its name and it will be reloaded so you can continue working.

Adding Paragraph Titles

When you start (or restart) a book the default mode is adding paragraph
titles.

The best practice is to enter ALL your paragraph titles first.
Then when you are sure they are correct begin to add your Segments and Breaks.

The best way to begin is to use the auto-fill button in the yellow bar below the editing window. This will add all the verse references you need and it will count your verses so you don’t have to. All you need to do then is add you actual titles.

(Remember that your verse refs are included in your title. The box labeled “verse ref” is used for your segment titles. This will be activated when you click to insert a segment. Ignore it for now.)

If you skip one or make a mistake you can insert, edit, or delete a title by clicking the edit icon to the left of the title.
This will open an editing window where you may choose what you would like to do.

Adding Segments, Sections, etc

When you are done adding your paragraph titles it is now time to start thinking about your breaks. To add any break whether it be Segment, Section, Division, or Book title follow the procedure below.

Click on the edit icon next to the paragraph title where you wish to add a break.

Find the type of break on the list in the window that pops up.

You will see that you can insert the break either above or below the point you have selected. Click either the “up” or “down” arrow to choose
and add your title.

Segments require verse references since these will also be used as Vertical titles.

Book Titles should be added to the end of the list and usually done last.

If you have a long title for a break and a tiny break. You may click the footnote checkbox which will place the title in a footnote with a small marker in the actual box in your horizontal.

If you make a mistake your breaks can be edited just like paragraph titles. IF YOU PUT ONE IN THE WRONG PLACE it can be moved with the move buttons and edited.

IMPORTANT! If you do not have a book title your charts will not build. And If you do not have at least one segment there will be no vertical charts created.

Once you have finished these steps you are ready to move on to Building your Charts!

Building your Charts

When you have finished all your titles you are now ready to Build your charts. Please follow the steps below.

Check the total number of verses you have assigned with the total number of verses in the book. If you are off 1 or 2 no big deal. But if you are off more than a few you have made a mistake in counting the verses in your titles and probably need to go back and check them out. You may have also accidentally deleted one of your paragraphs. Small discrepancies are common due to the mid-verse paragraph splitting that is common in some books. This can cause you to count the same verse more than once. This is not serious. (If you used auto-populate verses will be counted for you already)

If all is well. Click one of the two buttons in the builder tool box. They each have descriptions on them if you hold your mouse over them. Basically one of them is for small books and the other is for medium to large books.

Your results should pop up in the right hand window. If not Contact me.

Check your results by clicking one of your charts. If you need to make adjustments to the fonts etc. Then do the following.

Select different fonts and sizes from the builder tool box and click the change button.

To see what the fonts look like click the font previewer button. You can change fonts on the fly by clicking on the links below the font examples.

IMPORTANT!!!!! If you change font SIZES you must click the change button at the bottom before they will take effect. If you have changed the font type with the previewer those changes are good to go as soon as you click them.

Click the proper build button and see if you like your new changes.

When you are happy with the results you are ready to either save or print your work.

Very small books

There are a couple of things that change if you are doing a very small book that only requires one vertical chart. These books may have a
division or maybe even sections. However to produce a vertical chart there are a couple things you must be aware of.

Only segments produce vertical charts.

Therefore when doing a small book you need to make one segment that encompasses the entire book and the title you give this segment will be your vertical chart title.

All books must have at least one segment to produce a vertical chart.

Printing and Saving charts for use

I would HIGHLY recommend opening all your charts in new tabs. This will make the next steps much nicer.

You may either print directly from your browser at this point or save your charts as images.

If possible I recommend that you save them as images and either paste them into a word proccessor or drawing program (I recommend the drawing program
that is part of OpenOffice.org it is free and works very well for charting.) You may also want to print or manipulate it with some other program designed to handle graphics.

Printing from Browsers

Printing from browsers is a little more error prone, gives you less control, and usually poorer quality results. But it does work, and
it produces acceptable charts. However it is often neccessary to adjust the height of the charts so that your browser will print it on one page.

Before printing

Check your charts with print preview if possible to see if they will all fit on one page.

Tip:
Get Firefox

You may also need to go into the printer settings in your browser and turn off the url and date printing “features” or you will have a lot extraneous
things printed on each chart. Similar to the kind of things you get printed at the top and bottom of the page when you print an email or story from the web.

Importing and Exporting your files

QuickFrame now has the ability to import and export files. This allows you to keep backup copies of your work on your own computer. It also allows
you to move your work to and from the main QuickFrame server to your own private QuickFrame server. This new personal server allows you to work on QuickFrame even in places with no reliable internet connection.

REMEMBER:

When you IMPORT files you will completely replace all the current files
with those in the files you are importing. So MAKE SURE that you
are importing the latest copies of your work or you will lose your latest
work.

Problems and Feedback

Since this is a new project and still under development. You have an
interesting opportunity to influence the way this program works.
I have produced a Feedback area on this site specifically designed to
allow you to report problems and give suggestions on how this program or
its documentation could be made more useful.

Please take the time to give your input here. It will be much appreciated.

Thank you,

In the world of never ending spam email providers are getting more and more aggressive in filtering spam. In the past when people were not receiving their QuickFrame password emails all they had to do was look in their junk mail folder. However, I am now getting many reports that these emails are not only getting filtered but in many cases being destroyed before anyone can look at them.

Keep reading to learn what to do…

The best solution when you are not receiving your email at all is to use a throw away email account at a place like mailinator.com.

Simply make up a name like yourname@mailinator.com and put it in the space for your email address. Then go to mailinator.com and type in yourname (replace yourname with whatever you want) and your confirmation email should be there.

Hope that helps!

Because of the difficulty and expense of reliable Internet connections in some places I have added a stand alone version of QuickFrame for the MAC. The QuickFrame StandAlone server will allow you to use QuickFrame on your Mac computer without an Internet connection. Now whether you use a mac or a PC you can use QuickFrame with or without the Internet.

You can be using it in 6 easy steps:

Download the file named MAMP.zip here [Click to Download]

Extract the compressed MAMP.zip file to your desktop.

Move the folder named MAMP to the Applications folder on your computer.

Open the folder in the Applications folder and click on the icon called MAMP. When the control panel opens up click the start button this will start the QuickFrame servers processes. You are now ready to start using your new private Quickframe server.

Your browser should open to the home page of your new stand alone QuickFrame server. If not open your web browser and type in http://localhost:8888/quickframe

Log in as admin with a password of 4quickframe.

Once you have your server running you can also manage it from the handy web interface. To get to this interface go to http://localhost:8888 there are links on the left for various management functions and tools.

To Shut Down your server:

Open the Control Panel again and click the Stop button.

When the lights turn red your server is totally shut down and you can close the Control Panel.

There is also a widget that will join your other widgets when you hit f12. To install it you simply drag the widget icon to the /Library/Widgets folder on your computer. This will place a widget on your desktop to conveniently start and stop your QuickFrame server.

Enjoy!

A brand new version of QuickFrame Stand-Alone Server is out. It includes all the new features incorporated in the latest online version. I have included a few instructions below to help you get started.

Downloading

To download your copy of QuickFrame Stand-Alone Server go to the download page and download the latest version.

Unpacking QuickFrame

The QuickFrame Server comes in a “zip” file in Windows you generally just have to double click on it and extract it to the location of your choice. I recommend extracting it to your desktop to start. You can move the folder anywhere you want later.

Running QuickFrame

Once you have the file extracted you will see a folder called QuickFrame on your Desktop. Double click this folder and it will open on your desk top. There are two very import icons in this folder they are labeled: Server_Start and Stop

These two buttons not surprisingly are how you start and stop QuickFrame

Double click: Server_Start

In a few seconds your browser will open and you will be taken to the start page for your new QuickFrame Server. From there you can go to QuickFrame directly or go to the Administration page. The administration page gives you complete control of every aspect of your server but you will not have to use it for anything other that possibly changing passwords. There is documentation included on that page if you want to know more about how the QuickFrame Stand-Alone Server works.

QuickFrame Stand-Alone is powered by the awesome work of the people at “The Uniform Server” it is a powerful application and they do accept donations. If you feel this software was worth something to you consider giving them a small donation for all of their effort.

A Few Words about Passwords

All passwords are set to username: admin Password: 4quickframe

When you forget your password to QuickFrame it will reset your password to: 4quickframe.

If you are the only one using your server this is probably fine. However this is a full fledged server package and if you let others use it or you allow access from the internet, you will need to change all these passwords or you will open a HUGE security hole in your machine. This is your warning.

1 exception: Your main mysql (the database) user account is called root and the password is: 4quickframe

Once you have completed your chart frames in QuickFrame you have several choices for completing them. The article below describes several options as well as links to helpful templates.

 Hand Charting

Of course the tried and true method of charting is by hand. If you print your charts right from the browser you may still do them with colored pens or pencils in the normal way.

Computer charting

If you choose to complete your charts on computer there are several options available to you. Which one is “best” is really a matter of personal preference and budget. I will attempt to describe the most popular methods below:

OpenOffice

This program is really my favorite for several reasons. To begin with it is FREE in every sense of the word. So if you are shopping for Office software, before you spend a bunch of money or (God forbid) download illegal copies of MicroSoft products consider your needs carefully.

OpenOffice reads and writes to MS Office formats if neccessary. While conversion is not always perfect it improves with each version released. And since the price is FREE upgrading to a new version can be done at your convenience.

It is very easy to use

It has a drawing program. This feature is by far my favorite when it comes to charting. It is hands down the best program I have used for this purpose.

It has a number of large corporations contributing to its upkeep and development as well as a massive amount of private support and developement. It is not going to disappear suddenly in other words. And development is moving quickly.

If this site looks a bit like it is sponsored by OpenOffice that is why. Missionaries have enough financial problems. I feel that using free software can help at least a bit in that regard. The free software links I have included on this site are the ones I use daily. They are all excellent in my opinion.

Using Templates

I have included some basic templates for three different computer programs. Two of them are word processors and the third is the Drawing program I mentioned above. Using the templates is basically the same no matter which program you use so I am giving some generic instruction here that should get you through the basics with any of these programs.

In your browser right click on the image of your chart produced by QuickFrame.

Select “Save link as” from the menu and it will save an image of your chart.

Open up you word processor or drawing program and open the vertical chart template.

From the insert menu choose to insert a graphic. Find the image you just saved and insert it.

The image will undoubtedly be in the wrong place and probably slightly the wrong size. That’s OK.

Stretch the image to fit the location marked for the image on the template. You can stretch the image a fair amount before the legibility of the titles are effected.

Once the frame is properly in place on your new chart. You are ready to add text boxes to your insides. It is a good idea to have a blank text box saved in the clipboard ready for pasting since you will probably have to add many to a typical vertical chart. I would also recommend learning the hot keys for copying and pasting since you will be doing this often and mouse clicking gets tedious after awhile.

When you have completed your insides you can begin on your outsides by typing in the templates outer columns.

OpenOffice Draw has many handy features for charting I recommend it. It gives you better control over the objects you add than a word proccessor like MS Word or OOo Writer.

Horizontal charts

Horizontal charts can be done in the same way only do not use the templates. Just paste them into a blank document or drawing and use the normal editing features of the program to add key verse or other refinements to your chart.

In the process of building the Virtual-Quickframe server for VmWare I ran in to a lot of small but prickly problems.

I have written the following installation notes to help myself and others when they are trying to build Virtual Server Images for use with either VmWare Player or VmWare Server software.

Getting Started:

Step 1: Installing VmWare Server

http://vmware.com has excellent instructions for installation so I am not going to duplicate their efforts.

Step 2: Creating a new Virtual Machine

Click “Create a new virtual machine”

Click “typical”

Select the type of virtual machine

For these instructions I am creating a virtual machine based on Ubuntu Server

Give your virtual machine a unique name and select a place to save it.

Make sure you have enough space in the location to fit a least 2 gigs of files. (realistically much more is better)

Select the type of networking it will use

Bridged networking is generally the most transparent for a virtual server setup like this one.

Select the maximum disk space size

This is important:

For maximum speed check both boxes below the size widget

For making an image for the smallest finished image size uncheck at least the first checkbox.

Click Finish (and wait)

Step 3: Install Ubuntu Server (basically a LAMP server setup)

Power on the Virtual machine with the Ubuntu disk in the cdrom

Select “Install a Server”

Select the proper language and keyboard settings.

Choose a name for your virtual machine

Partition the virtual drive for your sever (the default is often fine)

Set the clock

Set up first user

(This is the sudo user for administration in Ubuntu)

When completed reboot and log in

Step 4: Setting up your new LAMP virtual server

Log in and type “sudo su” to get into a “root” session

run “apt-get update”

run “apt-get upgrade” to get your installation up to date

run “vi /etc/apt/sources.list”

type “i”

uncomment the commented repositories so you have access to the universe and multi-verse repositories

type “esc”

type “:wq”

run “apt-get update”

run “apt-get install apache2 php-mysql php-mysqli debconf-utils php5-mcrypt php5 php5-gd mysql-server mc openssh-server lokkit sysv-rc-conf phpmyadmin lynx”

run “vi /etc/apt/sources.list”

type “i”

comment out the line for the the install cdrom

type “esc”

type “:wq”

run “apt-get update”

run “mc”

find /etc/iptab

press F4

edit the line for eth0 to the following

eth0 driver pcnet32 arp 1

press F2 to save

This is VERY important if you want your image to have nework connection later. If you forget this step you will get a “eth0: Device not present” error later when you try to run your server image. This modification to iptab causes eth0 to be assigned to the first card with the pcnet32 driver instead of the specific MAC address of the “mother” virtual server image(When run on a different machine this MAC address does not exist).

Reboot

Test and season to taste

Step 5: Compress the image and test

When you have a finished working virtual server use whatever compression software you have to compress the virtual servers folder in a “zip” archive.

I use KDE so this is as easy as right clicking the folder and choosing “Compress as … folderName.zip” and waiting.

Test the image

move the zip file to another directory and extract

open VmWare Server console and click “open a virtual machine”

browse to the new folder and click the .vmx file

choose to create an ID when asked and test your server.

You should now have a working virtual server.

This is really all you should have to do to get a fully functional LAMP virtual server up and running and ready for distribution. I have made machines of this type with web software installed as small as 350megs compressed. This server had 1gig of available disk space after all the software was installed. Your mileage may vary.

Hope this helps!

Virtual-QuickFrame is really just a vanilla LAMP server based on the excellent Unbuntu Server 6.06. As such there are really many sources of information available on the web for administrating a Unbuntu LAMP server .However, there are a few peculiarities of the Virtual-QuickFrame setup that probably need a bit of explanation.

Getting started

Starting your Virtual Server

You will need either VmWare Player or VmWare Server to run your Virtual-QuickFrame Server. Use the instructions for installing these packages available from http://vmware.com Once you have the VmWare Server Console started you are ready to open your new Virtual-QuickFrame server. Click on “Open a virtual machine” and navigate to the “.vmx” file in the Virtual-QuickFrame folder. Then click “Power on” and if asked about creating an ID for your server click “create”. You should only have to do this once. Once your server is up and running you should be presented with a login prompt. You are now ready to login and explore your new server.

Logging in

Default Credentials:

username: admin
password: 4quickframe
Change this IMMEDIATELY!

You can log in with these credentials to begin using your new server. This account is the sudo account which means that you can run any program that requires root privileges simply by adding sudo to the front of it.

For example: sudo useradd

Will add a new user to the system after it asks you for your password.

There is also a list of modified and handy commands listed for you at login that are already “sudoed” so you can just type them and hit enter.

IMPORTANT!This username and password are used consistantly as the administrative account for almost everything. Since this is widely known on the Internet…

PLEASE CHANGE THIS PASSWORD AS SOON AS POSSIBLE IN EACH APPLICATION WHERE IT IS USED.

Changing your password

After logging into your server type ‘passwd’ and hit enter. Enter your current and new passwords when prompted. This is very important because your admin account has full sudo privileges for your virtual machine which means anyone knowing the password has FULL access to your server.

Finding the Address for your Server

Type ‘ifconfig’ at the command prompt. This will produce a report on the current address of your machine. Look for the section under “eth0″. There you will find “inet addr” followed by 4 numbers separated by dots. This is your server address. To access Quickframe open a browser and enter http://###.###.###.### (http:// followed by the above inet addr number) This should present you with the QuickFrame login page. http://###.###.###.###/grading should present you with the grading login page. http://###.###.###.###/phpmyadmin should present you with the login page for the mysql admin web interface. These programs all use admin:4quickframe as their username and password.

Please change them as soon as possible.

Never Use the Snapshot feature of VmWare Server

This feature will have unfortunate side effects that could result in inadvertent data loss. This may change in the future as the free version of VmWare Server evolves, but for now DO NOT USE IT.

Backing up your server

There are several ways to back up your server. The most obvious is to shut it down and make a copy of the Virtual-QuickFrame folder. However, most of the important data is held in the MySql database so a backup of these databases will usually be sufficient for backing up the crucial data on your server. These backups can be made through the phpmyadmin interface to your server.

Backing up your databases with phpmyadmin

Navigate to phpmyadmin in your browser http://yourserveraddress/phpmyadmin

Log in as admin (if you have not changed this password yet now is a good time. you do that by clicking on the “privileges” link on the phpmyadmin homepage)

Select the database you wish to backup from the dropdown selector in the left column.

Select the choices listed in the following screen shot:

Backup page screen shot
Click “Go” and save your backup somewhere safe.

Learning more about administrating your server

This server is built on Ubuntu (Dapper 6.06.1) and as such any howtos regarding Ubuntu Dapper will apply to this machine. The Internet generally and specifically Google is very helpful in problem solving just be sure to “Ubuntu” or “Dapper” to your search in Google and generally you will find useful help with your problem. Helpful links:

This howto is obviously a work in progress. However, it should be enough to get you started. If you have any other questions please feel free to contact me by clicking Here.

Enjoy!

Due to changes in the newest releases of Firefox hotkeys no longer work. I am sorry for the inconvenience. I am looking into it and if I can find an acceptable fix I will let you know on this site.

Thank you for your patience,

{:> Tom

Hotkeys are HUGE time savers when using QuickFrame.

Please take the time to learn the basic ones. You will not be sorry.

These hotkeys are available from the edit window

[u] = Move the title Up

[d] = Move the title Down

[c] = Change the title (same as pressing edit button)

[x] = X-out the title (same as pressing delete button)

[n] = New (moves cursor to the title field)

[s] = Save (same as clicking the add or insert button.)

[r] = Reload (available everywhere, same as reload button)

[number] = Select for editing the numbered title (available in the “Last 9 entries” window)

This is a full list of the hotkeys available in QuickFrame. Learning to use these is important. It saves time and relieves a lot of the repetitive stress involved with constantly reaching for the mouse and clicking buttons.

The amount of time you spend learning these few keys will be multiplied back to you many times as you use this program.

USING HOTKEYS

With FireFox, Mozilla and Internet Explorer hotkeys are activated by pressing [alt] + [hotkey].
Example: [alt] + [r] will do the same thing as clicking the reload button.
[alt]+[r]+[enter] on MS Internet Explorer

Other browsers will use other key combinations to activate hot keys. Check your browsers documentation if the above method does not work for you.
